We are talking about "good" trucking companies. Well, the very best trucking company closed the doors in 1980 and that was Johnson Motor Lines out of Charlotte, NC. I don't guess that there is a driver alive that have worked for more trucking companies than myself. You would not believe the trucking jobs that I have had and I can honestly say that Johnson Motor Lines was the very best.
We ran mostly a team operation with coe Internationals and nobody and I mean nobody "pushed" you. If it took a week to get from Charlotte to Boston, not one word was said. We were union and I can show you check stubs that equal what drivers are making today. I never saw a driver request time off and was not granted what he wanted. Johnson was just an outstanding trucking company.
Mr. H.B. Rollins, a lawyer in Baltimore, Md. owned Johnson(lock, stock and barrel). He was in his 80s and had no children and in 1978 he sold the company to Riss International and within 2 years the doors were shut.
August 15th, 1980 I walked off the yard in Charlotte with a tear in my eye.
